Mounting
Definition
The metal framework of a piece of jewelry that holds the gemstone(s) in place. Also called the 'setting' or 'mount,' it includes the head, prongs or bezel, shank (band), and any decorative metalwork.
A mounting is the complete metal structure of a jewelry piece — everything except the gemstone(s). For a ring, this includes the shank (band), the head (where the center stone sits), prongs or bezel, gallery (side profile details), and any accent stone settings. Mountings are available as semi-mounts (ready to accept a center stone) or complete mounts (with accent stones pre-set). They are manufactured through casting, die-striking, hand fabrication, or 3D printing/casting. Material choices include gold (14k, 18k), platinum, palladium, and silver. The quality of a mounting — metal thickness, prong symmetry, finishing quality, and structural integrity — directly affects the durability, appearance, and value of the finished piece.
Usage in the Trade
Mountings are discussed in ring design, custom jewelry creation, and retail. Jewelers source semi-mounts from manufacturers (Stuller, Benchmark, A. Jaffe) or produce custom mountings in-house.
