About this tool

This calculator estimates the melt value of gold by multiplying the pure gold content (based on karat) by the current spot price per gram. The dealer buy price range reflects the typical 70–80% of melt value that scrap dealers and refiners offer.

Actual prices you receive will vary based on the dealer, quantity of gold, your relationship with the buyer, and current market volatility. Always get multiple quotes before selling scrap gold.

Common questions

Melt value equals pure gold content multiplied by the current spot price per gram. For 14K gold, that's 58.3% pure gold. Multiply weight in grams by 0.583, then by the spot price per gram. This calculator does that math for you.

Most dealers pay 70-80% of melt value. Established refiners with lower overhead may pay 85-90%. Pawn shops typically pay 50-65%. Always get at least three quotes before selling.

Not always. Older jewelry, pieces from certain regions, and costume jewelry can be mis-stamped. If you're selling a significant amount, have it tested with an acid test kit or XRF analyzer. Most reputable dealers test before quoting.

Gold prices fluctuate daily. If you need cash now, sell now. If you can wait, watch the spot price for a few weeks. Small daily movements (1-2%) matter less than the dealer's buy rate. A dealer paying 85% of melt at a lower spot price may still beat a dealer paying 70% at a higher spot.

Gold-plated jewelry has virtually no scrap value since the gold layer is extremely thin. Gold-filled (marked GF or 1/20) has a thin gold layer bonded to base metal and has minimal scrap value. Only solid karat gold (10K, 14K, 18K, 22K, 24K) has meaningful melt value.
